Frequently Asked Questions About Asylum:

What is this place?

Asylum is a livejournal community and webpage dedicated to our members. We maintain a safe place for the members to voice anything they need to... from rants and raves, to artwork, to questions and concerns about mental illnesses, to life strss, to general nonsense to role playing. We believe that we foster a tight knit community that can be counted upon to support any member in their hour of need, or simply laugh and commune during better days.

How do you become a member?

Do you have to have a mental illness to join?

No, this is a safe place for everyone. Just be forewarned that we tend to focus on mental illness, medications and symptoms. If you don't mind this, feel free to participate! No one here will discriminate against you regardless of your mental state.

Is your staff trained medical professionals?

Currently there are no licensed medical practitioners on staff, though there are members of staff working toward their degrees. Most of the staff here are simply volunteers who lend a shoulder and a listening ear when they are needed. If situations become too involved, the members are referred to licensed medical staff in their area. We take the time to find ones that will work with you.

Why do you have a members-only section?

In order to foster a safe place for the members to post what they wish, we feel that it is important that any information given by them stays out of the public domain. The members-only section to the site contains avenues for our members to communicate with each other outside the judgemental public eye.

Do you have to pay to be a member?

No. Our site and services are free, 24/7/265. You are never alone as a member of Asylum and you always have a place to be yourself.

Should I be concerned for my son's (or daughter's) mental state if I discover that he (she) is a member?

We do not diagnose mental illness here. We have members from all walks of life, all age groups and professions. Being a member may suggest that your child is not crazy, but may be interested in a job in the psychology field, or perhaps very artistic and needs a safe place to get feedback on his or her art...We provide a safe place. Your child will not be picked on or stalked while he or she is here. (and if a situation arises, he or she will need to talk to a staffmember to stop the unwanted attention. We also cannot monitor the site 24/7) We post factual and true information on mental illness here so your child will not be misguided... however, we cannot diagnose. . We suggest that you talk to your child and determine for yourself if he or she needs professional help.
